Getting Ready for Spring, Part 1

15. That’s how many weeks are left until spring is here. For us gardeners, it can’t come soon enough!

Honestly, I started seeds even back in Dec in my Aerogarden. Below, you will see two large tomato sauce can planters. These seeds were started back in October. I lost track of time what pepper variety they are but they’re spicy for sure.

Spicy pepper plants started from seed last October! They are about 6” tall.
Here are a couple more bigger pepper plants.

The other day, I spent almost 5 hours tidying up and organizing the cold cellar. I also moved a tall chrome rack and set up a seedling growing centre. It was a challenge to hang the lights given the space but we made it work!

Grow rack of seedlings and seeds waiting to germinate!
Sweet potato slips. Beauregard variety.
Ginger rhizomes.
1 of 19 varieties of tomatoes I’m growing this spring. I use the paper towel germination method so as not to waste seeds.

I also like to propagate from cuttings as much as possible. This saves a lot of time. About two weeke ago, I purchased fresh basil from Pusateri. I stripped the leaves of the bottom half and simply set them in water on the window sill. Today I checked and saw roots! I was so excited!!! And this is a great way to grow more nails – just from cuttings.

Not only do I have roots, I also have flowers!!!

I’m also trying to root rosemary and because it’s a woodier herb, it takes a little longer.

Here’s my baby Dragonfruit cacti, grown from seed! These are from the yellow Dragonfruit. I read it takes a while but some of my older ones, though small still, already have baby spikes!

Look at the spikes on this Dragonfruit cacti started in October!
Yellow Dragonfruit seeds started about 2 weeks ago.
These are the different varieties of tomatoes I’m growing. Half of them I got from either trades or grocery store purchased tomatoes – yes these seeds are a viable!

Well, that’s all for now! I’m going to share how I germinate and plant all the seeds I grow! Have a great day and thanks for stopping by and reading my post!
