Sowing Seeds (part 1)

I can’t believe there are less than 3 days left in February. It seems the month just came and went. In gardening terms, I guess that’s a good thing because it means we’re just that much closer to planting season!

6 of each variety were sown. I might have to do sow more in a couple of days.

Tonight, after the kids went to sleep, I decided to sow some cold-tolerant veggies. These will be ready to be transplanted outside by mid-April. Last year, I wasn’t as organized with my labelling system and I ended up with unidentified plants. It all worked out and we got food from them but it would have been nice to know the variety.

Multiple varieties get the same letters but different numbers so I can track them!

This year, I promised myself that I would label clearly each variety so that there would be no unidentified seedling. I find that writing codes instead of multiple words makes it so much easier. I just need to keep my master list so I can refer to it after. That’s how easy it is! I also include the date when the seeds were down.

Seedling cells inside a greenhouse tray to keep moisture and heat in to encourage germination.

I’ll be using this system for everything from now on. Don’t know why I didn’t think of it before! anyhow, these will stay on top of a seedling heat mat to encourage germination, after which, I will put them under grow lights.

How do you label your seedlings? Do you have a system that works for you?
