Back in December, we purchased 8 chicken eggs to hatch in an incubator. On Dec. 25, we were blessed with 7 healthy chicks – each a different colour! We were so thrilled as we got to witness the entire hatching process. It was so exciting to watch the cracks form as the little beaks work their way to break the egg shell.

The chicks were as fluffy as they looked and it was amazing to hear them peeping through their egg shells! There was something alien-like, watching the eggs rock back and forth as the chicks work their way out. Within a few minutes of hatching out of the egg, their feathers fluff up and dry. All 7 of them hatched like clockwork on the same day!

The first one to hatch was Sandy (Claws). The other lighter ones followed suit, with the last being the dark-feathered ones. Aren’t they adorable? You can imagine how nice it was to hold them in your hands. Just 11 weeks ago, each of them fit into our hands, weighing at a mere average of 48 g. Now, they have grown into larger chickens – with Bear and Puddles at almost 2 kg!!! We could not believe how fast they grew! And just like what people said, they’re eating and pooping machines – no joke!!!

For the past two weeks, we have been hearing some of them crowing and now we have finally confirmed that we have three cockerels! And it turns out, they were also the larger ones. Bear, Puddles and Sandy are boys!!! We will most likely give away the boys once the hens are about laying age (18 weeks) so we do not get more chicks. (Yikes! It’s like birth control for chickens. LOL.) In any case, we cannot wait to have fresh eggs from our chickens as we are huge egg lovers here.
Right now, they are quickly outgrowing their box, which I have renovated about 4 times. Once the temperatures are at least 10 degrees C, we can move them out to the backyard. Yippee! They can then have their steady diet of bugs and worms.

These chickens are a mixed breed called Easter Eggers. Their eggshell colours vary from white, blue-green, olive, and buff-colored. The eggs we got for hatching though were mostly different shades of brown. I guess only time will tell what colour eggs these hens will lay! The chicks are quite friendly and good-natured. We love the sounds they make when they are happy. Here is a link to someone’s video of their chicken being happy.
