Happy First Day of Spring!

The snow slowly melting away, revealing the backyard and what’s to come of the planting season ahead.

I can’t believe that spring is finally here! You know the feeling when everyone has left for the day and you have the whole house to yourself ? And it’s just after 9am? The birds are chirping and the sun is shining. Everything feels great at this moment. One of the things I enjoy about the quiet morning is being able to think clearly. Yes, believe it or not, I find the hustle and bustle of others around me distracting. I also have a lot, really A LOT, of thoughts running through my head constantly. So when I’m by myself I’m able to slowly go through those thoughts and process them.

It’s Monday and we’ve got a lot of things on our list to do – especially out in the garden! The weather is perfect – warm, sunny and mild. Our enclosed front porch thermometer read this temperature this morning – 17 degrees Celsius! It’s much warmer now that the sun has been beating down on it since it rose. Love it!

You guessed it, we’ve got some building projects lined up. But then again, People who know us know that we always have ongoing projects. Firstly, the weather is warming up and the chickens are outgrowing their space in the basement. I keep finding feathers outside of the their box. I am very excited for them to also be able to forage outside for greens and bugs.

Secondly, we’ve got loads of windows waiting to be built into a greenhouse. All of these windows were salvaged from home renos and we are so excited to be able to use them. Yesterday, we built a small greenhouse on too of our waste shed. It’s a perfect place as the sun comes up from the east and sets on the west, providing sun almost the entire day! I’ve got some lettuce and radishes growing in it. I am hoping to have the larger greenhouse in the garden finished soon so I can move the larger seedlings out of the basement.

I also did some cleaning up in the garden removing dead plant material from last year.

Thirdly, we have the chicken coop to build. Our generous neighbour gave us a lot of plywood so we are going to start the platform for the coop today. What are you doing outdoors today on this beautiful spring day?
