Getting Handy

In the beginning of the week, the weather was sunny and mild so we took advantage of it and built parts of the chicken coop. Using the plywood our neighbour gave us, a salvaged window and some other lumber we had lying around, we managed to build the floor and two walls – one with a framed window! It was awesome seeing the process of building it – Michael is so handy and good with these things and I am so lucky to have him!

I felt brave enough that I tried to build a cold frame out of 1″x2″ lumber and I even managed to make some 45 degree cuts using the compound mitre saw! I used to teach shop and used the bandsaw, scroll saw and drill press before but not a mitre saw. I’ll admit that it was scary at first and I made sure to wear safety goggles just in case. For a first build, it was not too bad. I even cut smaller pieces of wood to make trusses. I was so proud of myself!

One of things I have too much of is fabric. I have boxes and boxes of it and I felt guilty just letting them sit so I started sewing. I’ve been wanting to sew a reversible crossover smock for a while now. The problem was that I did not have a pattern and I also do not have a large tabletop to work on. So I looked up a pattern and then freehanded and eyeballed the template on a piece of recycled kraft paper (you know the ones that Amazon uses to pack their boxes with?). Turns out, the smock I made was just snug enough for W to fit in. Basically, I made a toddler-sized one! Now I have to adjust the pattern to enlarge it. It really was not a hard thing to sew. I think I will work on it some more next week.

Well, I have to go and work on my course now as it is due next Thur! I also have to deliver a presentation online on Wednesday – my first one as a TA for AgScape. Wish me luck!
