I can’t believe April is coming to an end! It feels like not long ago when I was counting the number of weeks until the last frost date. And yet, here we are, less than 2 weeks away from it!

I’ve spent so much time babying the tomato seedlings which I started too early that I forgot to start the other annual veggie seeds. So I’ve been starting some seeds every other day – some directly outside, like the lettuces, carrots, beets and kohlrabi. I’m soaking some garden peas to get them started as well.
Our Magidome now has two vented areas. We’ve also added a fan for air circulation. The sun gets very hot, in fact, too hot that it burned some of the tomato leaves in there. So we’ve added a fleece cover to diffuse the sun’s rays a little.

Yesterday and today have been overcast, which is great. This will give the tomato leaves time to catch a break from the heat of the sun, which can heat the dome up to 38 degrees C!
Speaking of the heat in the dome, we’ve decided to use the dome for heat- loving plants like peppers, melons and eggplants. We may have to increase the venting and include a passive irrigation system.
Weather-wise, in zone 5b, we’re expecting frost tomorrow night, with the temperature dipping down to -2 degrees C. In fact, while driving home from Walmart earlier tonight, it started to flurry. I guess this will be the last cold snap and then it’s definitely spring!!!
In less than a week, the night temperatures will remain above zero. This is exciting as it means we can finally move the hens out to the coop! Before that, we need to enclose the area for their run.

I’ve started baking bread again. the no knead kind. When I do the smell fills the house and the street. It’s crazy! There’s nothing like a warm slice of bread slathered with salted butter. Mmmm…
Anyhow, this is it for now! I know it’s been a while but I hope I’ve given enough details to update you on what’s happening at our place. Until next time, thanks for stopping by!
